JERONIMO ELESPE
October 30 – December 4, 2011 | 11 Rivington St, NY

Eleven Rivington is pleased to present a solo exhibition of new paintings by Spanish artist Jeronimo Elespe, on view from October 30 - December 4, 2011. The show will feature recent small-scale oil paintings, all on aluminum panel. The artist will be the subject of a major solo museum exhibition, opening January 2012, at Centro de Arte Contemporaneo (CAC), Malaga, Spain.

Elespe's recent body of work - his most intimate and autobiographical to date - represents a focused meditation on the home and studio. Tiny, meticulous brushstrokes encrusted upon aluminum panel reveal bleary spaces and figures culled exclusively from the artist's memory and immediate surroundings. Developed over a period of months or even years, each gem-like panel is a palimpsest, dense with the history of its making. Traces of Spanish Baroque's luminosity and the aureoles of sacred art permeate the work; Elespe's grainy, retinal brushstrokes suggest a world as if seen upon waking. Intimate and diaristic in scale and content, Elespe's paintings ponder the cyclical nature of the domestic, its various narrative arcs - real and fictional.

Elespe was born in Madrid in 1975, where he currently lives and works, and was educated at Yale University (MFA) and School of Visual Arts (BFA). This is the artist's 10th solo exhibition. He has previously shown at John Connelly Presents, NY; Galeria Soledad Lorenzo, Madrid; Von Lintel, NY; and Massimo Audiello, NY. Group exhibitions include Mitchell Algus, NY; The Tang Museum, Skidmore; and MassArt, Boston, among others. His work is included in the collection of The Carnegie Museum of Art, Pittsburgh.
