Van Doren Waxter is pleased to present Doug Young’s never before exhibited wooden chains sculptures “Chains A” and “Chains B” in the lobby niches’s of the building . Young’s work is concerned with the materiality of the carving process and the handmade nuance that is present in this time honored tradition. Each sculpture consists of 3 sections of 35 foot chains, which are hand carved Eastern Pine and then assembled into seamless chains. The dramatic scale shift and the re-contextualization of the industrial links within a domestic space promote tension between the natural and manmade worlds, and a sense of awe with regard to man’s technological prowess over nature. The sculptures will be on view September 14 through January 7, 2017.
