Artemis Greenberg Van Doren Gallery is pleased to present a group exhibition of paintings titled All American, on view from November 14 - December 28, 2001. The exhibition will feature works by a generation of American artists who emerged during the post-war era.
All American will present selected works by artists who were part of, inspired by, or reacted to the New York School. This movement is represented by classic examples of Hans Hofmann, Jackson Pollock, Willem de Kooning, Franz Kline, Robert Motherwell, and Cy Twombly. In counterpart to this group will be examples of California abstraction by Richard Diebenkorn and Sam Francis. Twombly’s Untitled (Roma) - which is inscribed ‘painting of R.R.’ (Robert Rauschenberg) - bridges the Abstract Expressionists with Pop Artists Roy Lichtenstein, Andy Warhol, and Robert Rauschenberg. Among the highlights in this group is Warhol’s graphic reversal Nine Blue Marilyns, and a late work by Lichtenstein, Interior With Woman Leaving, which is painted with his trademark outlined forms. Frank Stella is represented in the exhibition with a relief work from the 70s, Mysterious Bird of Ulieta.
