Van Doren Waxter's online viewing room is titled ‘Expanded Geometry.' The curated presentation will bring to light a dynamic, and formal conversation occurring between artists from within the gallery’s program and expertise field, exposing direct dialogues among artists from different schools and generations. The viewing room will highlight works by artists which focus and touch on geometrical ideas, including aesthetic considerations of shape, edge, volume, and scale. Formal concerns – from the specifically mathematic to more general ideas - will link historic works by Richard Diebenkorn, Elizabeth Murray, Leon Polk Smith, Hedda Sterne, Mark di Suvero, and Jack Tworkov among others.
The works in the online viewing room encompass drawing, painting and sculpture, and are united in their observation and representation of shapes – whether strictly linear, circular, or multi-sided. The arrangement of measured lines and forms, and the delineation of shape, brings together this grouping of like-minded artworks and objects by many visionaries of post-war American art. Van Doren Waxter’s presentation of ‘Expanded Geometry’ continues the gallery’s focused commitment and attention to different and inclusive aspects and views of American abstraction.
